Boise & the Treasure Valley

Pool Deck Installation in Boise, Idaho

Slip-rated surfaces that stay cool underfoot in July, drain properly in a thunderstorm, and survive 130 freeze-thaw cycles a winter. Built by a crew that has been doing it here for over 20 years.

Why It Matters

The Deck Decides Whether the Pool Works

A pool in the Treasure Valley runs $60,000 to $120,000. The 800 to 1,200 square feet of surface around it usually gets decided last, from whatever budget is left. That order of operations is backwards.

The deck is the surface your family stands on barefoot when it is 100 degrees out. It is what your kids run across, wet, forty times a day. It has to move thousands of gallons of splash-out and backwash away from the pool shell and the house foundation. And it has to do all of that through an Idaho winter without heaving, cracking, or opening up at the joints.

Get it right and nobody ever thinks about it again. Get it wrong and you are looking at repairs, trip hazards, and a surface nobody wants to walk on within three seasons.

What We Build For

Three Things a Boise Pool Deck Has to Get Right

Slip Resistance

Traction on a wet pool deck is a measured property, not a matter of taste. We specify pavers rated well above the 0.42 DCOF threshold for wet areas — tumbled and textured finishes that hold their grip as algae and mineral deposits build up over the years. Smooth and polished surfaces look excellent in a showroom and have no business around a pool.

Heat Management

Boise clears 90 degrees on about 45 days a year, and dark hardscape regularly passes 140 degrees at the surface. Colour and material choice are worth 20 to 30 degrees underfoot — the difference between a deck people use in the afternoon and one they sprint across. We put surface temperature on the table during specification, not after your first July.

Drainage

Pool decks carry more water than any patio and the water is chemically treated. The finished surface has to fall away from the coping at a minimum of a quarter inch per foot while still draining away from the house, the fence, and your neighbour’s yard. On Treasure Valley clay that usually means channel drains, catch basins, and subsurface drainage under the base.

What Is Different About Building One Here

Freeze-thaw is the whole ballgame. The Treasure Valley crosses the 32-degree line in both directions 100 to 130 times a year. Water that gets into a paver or an open joint expands every time it freezes, and that expansion is what displaces pool decks. We specify pavers under 5% water absorption by ASTM standard and seal the joints with polymeric sand that actually closes them.

The clay under your yard moves. Most of the valley sits on old lake-bed deposits — clay that swells wet and shrinks dry. A pool deck built on a thin base over that soil will shift enough within a few seasons to open joints and lift coping. We build a minimum of eight inches of compacted crushed aggregate, placed in lifts, with geotextile fabric separating it from the native soil.

Your deck spends five months as a winter surface. Treasure Valley pools close from roughly October to April. For those months the deck sits under snow and ice with none of the moderating effect of heated pool water. It has to perform as a winter hardscape, not just a summer one — which rules out several materials that work fine in Phoenix.

We have been building through Boise winters for over two decades — from the foothills above Warm Springs to the newer developments in Southeast Boise where pools are close to standard. For the full range of what we build, see our paver installation work across Boise.

Common Questions

Boise Pool Deck FAQ

What does a pool deck cost in Boise?

Most Treasure Valley pool decks land between $22 and $40 per square foot installed, which puts a typical 900-square-foot surround somewhere in the $20,000 to $36,000 range. The spread comes from paver selection, how much drainage work the site needs, and whether there is existing concrete to remove. Sites with significant grade changes or subsurface drainage requirements run toward the top. Every project starts with an on-site assessment and an itemised proposal — no allowances, no surprise change orders.

Do I need a permit for a pool deck in Boise?

The deck surface itself generally does not require a building permit from the City of Boise. What can trigger one: retaining walls over four feet, work that alters drainage patterns, and anything inside the Boise River setback zones. Pool barrier and fencing requirements are separate and are enforced. If your property sits in the North End Historic District, design review may apply. We handle permitting on any project that needs it.

How long does installation take?

A typical residential pool deck runs one to three weeks from excavation to final joint sand, depending on square footage, drainage complexity, and material. Projects needing significant excavation or subsurface drainage sit at the longer end. If you are coordinating with a pool builder we schedule around their shell and equipment work — that sequencing matters and it is worth getting right up front.

Can you build the deck around an existing pool?

Yes, and it is a good share of what we do. Replacing a failing concrete deck around an established pool is straightforward work as long as the coping and bond beam are sound — we assess both before quoting. Removing old concrete gives us a chance to correct drainage that was wrong from the start, which is frequently the reason the original deck failed.

Which pavers stay coolest?

Lighter colourways in any material, first and foremost — a sandstone tone runs 20 to 30 degrees cooler than charcoal in the same product. Beyond colour, porcelain pavers hold up best on heat and have near-zero water absorption, which also makes them excellent through freeze-thaw. They cost more and need a mortar-set or pedestal installation rather than sand-set. Several manufacturers now offer reflective-pigment concrete pavers built specifically for pool surrounds, which give most of the benefit at a lower price point.

Do pool deck pavers need sealing?

Depends on the material. Natural stone — travertine and limestone especially — should be sealed to keep water absorption down and hold up through Idaho freeze-thaw. Most quality concrete pavers do not need sealing to perform, though some owners seal for colour enhancement or stain resistance. Porcelain does not need it at all. Whatever gets specified, you will get the maintenance requirements in writing.
