A completed Nostalgic Paver Systems hardscape project in the Treasure Valley

From First Call to Finished Patio: What the NPS Process Actually Looks Like

One of the most common concerns homeowners have before starting a major hardscape project isn’t about the pavers — it’s about the contractor. What will working with this company actually feel like? Here’s exactly what a Nostalgic Paver Systems project looks like, start to finish.

The hardscape industry has a communication problem. Contractors who do beautiful work routinely let clients down with vague timelines, spotty updates, and a “we’ll get there when we get there” attitude that leaves homeowners anxious and frustrated. After 20 years of building premium outdoor spaces across Boise, Meridian, Eagle, Nampa, and the wider Treasure Valley, we’ve built our process specifically to eliminate that experience.

This is what working with Nostalgic Paver Systems actually looks like — every step of the way, from the first call to the day we leave your driveway for the last time.

Step 1: The Project Discovery Call

Everything starts with a conversation, not a quote. Our discovery process is designed to understand your project before we’ve seen a single square foot of your property. We want to know what you’re trying to accomplish, what’s driving the timing, what your experience has been with contractors in the past, and what success looks like for you.

This isn’t a sales script — it’s a genuine attempt to figure out whether we’re the right fit for each other. We don’t take every project, and we’re honest about that upfront. If the scope isn’t right, or if the timeline doesn’t work with our current schedule, we’ll tell you.

The discovery call is also where we talk through budget in real terms. We serve a homeowner profile that’s investing $75,000 and above in their outdoor space. If that range doesn’t match your project, we’d rather you know that now than after we’ve spent both of our time.

Step 2: The On-Site Assessment

If the discovery call confirms a good fit, the next step is an on-site walkthrough of your property. This is where the real planning begins.

During the site visit, we’re evaluating the existing grade and drainage patterns, the soil conditions, any structural considerations that affect the project (proximity to foundations, utilities, irrigation), and the relationship between the planned project and the rest of your outdoor environment. We’re not just looking at where the pavers will go — we’re looking at everything that affects how they’ll perform long-term.

We’ll also spend time talking with you about design preferences — patterns, materials, edge treatments, how the project connects to your home’s architecture and the surrounding landscaping. We work with real project photography to help clients visualize options, and we can walk through material samples on-site.

After the site visit, we have what we need to build a proper proposal.

Step 3: The Proposal

Within a week of the site visit, you’ll receive a detailed written proposal. This document covers:

Scope of work. Exactly what we’re building, including all base work, drainage infrastructure, materials, and finishes. Nothing is vague.

Materials specification. The specific paver product, manufacturer, and color selection. The edge restraint system. The joint sand specification. Every component is named.

Timeline. A projected start window and estimated project duration based on the current build schedule. We don’t give you “sometime this summer.” We give you a realistic picture of when we can begin.

Investment. The full project cost, presented transparently. What you see in the proposal is what the project costs. We don’t do low-ball estimates that grow as the job progresses.

We walk you through the proposal together — in person or via video call — so you understand every line item and have the opportunity to ask questions before you sign anything.

Step 4: Pre-Construction Planning

Once you’ve accepted the proposal and signed the contract, your project enters the pre-construction phase. This is where we:

  • Confirm material orders and lead times (some paver products have 2–6 week lead times)
  • Coordinate with your local utility locating service (Idaho 811) to mark underground lines before excavation
  • Verify any required permits and inspections with your municipality
  • Confirm your project’s specific start date and introduce you to your project lead

You’ll hear from us during this phase — not just on the day the crew shows up. We believe in communication before anything starts, not just when a problem emerges.

Step 5: Construction

When our crew arrives, you’ll know what to expect and when. We work clean, we respect your property, and we keep you informed throughout the build.

For a project of meaningful scope, here’s how the construction sequence typically unfolds:

Day 1–2: Excavation, removal of existing material, and rough grade preparation. This is the messy phase — it involves heavy equipment and significant soil movement. It will look worse before it looks better. That’s normal.

Day 2–4: Base installation. This is the most technically important phase of the project and the one that determines long-term performance. Crushed aggregate base is installed in compacted lifts, drainage infrastructure is set, edge restraints are positioned, and the bedding layer is screeded. None of this is visible in the finished product, but every bit of it matters.

Day 4–6 (depending on project size): Paver installation. This is where the project starts to look like what you hired us to build. Pavers are set, joints are maintained, and the pattern takes shape.

Final day(s): Joint sand application and activation, final compaction, cleanup, and detail work. We don’t leave until the site is clean and the installation looks the way it should.

Step 6: The Final Walkthrough

Before we leave your property for the last time, we do a formal walkthrough with you. We want you to see every edge, every transition, every detail before we consider the job complete.

If anything isn’t right — and in 20 years we’ve had situations where something needed correction — we address it. That’s not a negotiation; that’s just what standing behind our work looks like in practice.

At the final walkthrough, we also walk you through maintenance expectations — what the surface will do as it cures and weathers in its first season, when and how to top up joint sand, what normal looks like versus what warrants a call to us.

After the Project: We’re Still Here

Our relationship with clients doesn’t end at the final walkthrough. Every project we build is covered by a workmanship warranty. If something shifts, fails, or behaves in a way that traces back to installation, we fix it. No runaround, no “that’s out of scope” — we own our work.

Beyond warranty coverage, many of our clients call us years later when they’re ready to add the next phase — an outdoor kitchen space, a retaining wall, additional hardscape to connect two areas of their property. We’re here for that too.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a paver project take from first call to completion? From discovery call to project start, the timeline typically runs 4 to 10 weeks depending on our current schedule and material lead times. The construction phase itself ranges from 3 to 10 working days depending on project size and complexity. We provide specific timeline information at every stage of the process — no vague estimates.

Do I need to be home during construction? Not necessarily, though we appreciate when clients are reachable by phone. For the final walkthrough, we do ask that you’re present — that’s the moment when we want to walk the project together and confirm that everything is exactly right before we close out.

What happens if something goes wrong during construction? We tell you immediately. One of the things we’re most committed to is transparency when a complication arises — whether it’s an unexpected soil condition, a utility conflict, or a material issue. We lay out the situation, explain the options, and move forward together. The last thing we do is quietly manage a problem while hoping you won’t notice.

How is the project cost structured? Do I pay all upfront? Our contracts include a structured payment schedule — typically an initial deposit upon signing, progress payments at defined construction milestones, and a final payment at project completion. The full payment schedule is outlined in your proposal. We don’t ask for full payment upfront.

Can I make changes to the design after the project has started? Minor adjustments are sometimes manageable depending on where we are in the construction sequence. Significant design changes after excavation and base work have begun are generally not feasible without starting a meaningful portion of the work over. We invest significant time in the design and proposal phase precisely to avoid this situation — it’s worth taking the time to get the design right before ground is broken.

What does your workmanship warranty cover? Our workmanship warranty covers defects in installation — settling, shifting, or failures that trace to base preparation, drainage design, edge restraint installation, or joint sand application. It does not cover surface wear, aesthetic changes due to weathering, or damage from external factors like vehicles on areas not designed for vehicle load. We’re straightforward about what it covers and we honor it.
